Alder & Tweed Level Up Neutral Walls With Wood Veneer Wallcovering

Inspired by the breathtaking mountains of the area, Alder & Tweed's principal and founder Heather Humphrey chose several Phillip Jeffries wallcoverings from the Cascades Collection to bring her designs to life for two very different projects.

Since founding Alder & Tweed Design Co. more than a decade ago, siblings Reed and Heather Humphrey have built an esteemed interior design firm that specializes in creating curated luxury and “home away from home” experiences for the residential and hospitality markets. They strive for each project to have a
unique vision and style. These two projects in Utah last fall proved to be the perfect environments for relaxation and recreation whether you are at home or in an office.

The first project was pretty close to home - the Alder & Tweed's brand new office space.

THE BEFORE: ALDER & TWEED OFFICE
With their team moving into a new office building in Park City, Utah, it was time for Alder & Tweed to showcase their elevated, organic style by transforming one of their own conference rooms into an inspiring space for client presentations.

"I felt like we didn’t want you typical office vibe," said Heather. "Offices can feel very generic with your formula roller chairs and all this very functional, generic and uninspiring furniture."

The bi-level office building was designed by the firm and features 2 levels and several office suites. Having just finished the interior and adding the final touches before moving in, the new conference room was next on the list. Heather wanted an atypical office vibe with custom furniture, gorgeous art, and some color. A place to WOW clients!

“We wanted to show our work and inspire our clients with simple-yet-inspiring design,” said Heather. She was looking to add color when she selected Timber Trails Rabbit Run, 9432, an oak wood veneer wallcovering with a vertical plank pattern.  “That wood veneer has a lot of color coming through it without being too bold. We wanted the art to play off of it.”

Timber Trails is a specialty wood veneer wallcovering that uses authentic oak wood. Each piece is thinly sliced, dyed, and hand laid for an organic, vertical panel look. The authentic wood panels create dimension and character with knots, grains, and saturated colors.

THE AFTER: ALDER & TWEED OFFICE
“Phillip Jeffries has such beautiful wallcoverings it was easy to find something elevated with an organic feeling,” said Heather. "We loved that the wood veneer had a lot of color coming through it without being a ‘brown’ wood wallcovering, or too bold. We wanted timeless and color.  And wanted the art to play off of it."

Heather bought a large piece of art in France last year and was drawn to the simple yet inspiring style. Phillip Jeffries Timber Trails wallcovering was the perfect soft and elegant background for this special piece.

"We designed the custom table, said Heather. "It's very funky" The ribbing pairs well with a darker granite top while the walls provide a hint of color. "Everything felt very simple and inspiring," said Heather.

At the same time, a client’s whole home renovation was underway in Salt Lake City. Starting with a blank slate in this residential project as well, Humphrey also drew inspiration from nature and made a plan to layer soft textures in a chic neutral palette.

THE BEFORE: SALT LAKE CITY HOME
When a couple tapped Alder & Tweed to redesign a 1950s rambler-style home, Heather instantly drew inspiration from the surrounding mountains to infuse a sense of place.  "Both sides of Salt Lake are surrounded by mountains," she said. "Wherever you go, you have beautiful view of mountains."

The entire home was reimagined with a new addition, a new kitchen and a new master suite. Since the rooms were completely remodeled, it was the perfect blank slate.  “It was just white walls – a pretty generic room,” she said.

"We added a fireplace in the bedroom," said Heather. "The bed looks out onto the windows which looks onto the mountain range, but to the left of the bed there’s a gas-burning fireplace on the wall. It’s not a big room, but it’s long. Utah get so cold so it’s nice to have these cosy little nooks and areas. Adding a fireplace was a fun thing to do!"

To create a serene escape in the bedroom, Humphrey choose the beautiful and scenic mural, Daybreak in Clouds, 9533. This layered ombré mountainscape wallcovering features painterly brush strokes and dimensional texture.

“The wallcovering was the inspiration!” said Heather.

THE AFTER: SALT LAKE CITY HOME
Once the mural was installed, the room felt like a sanctuary. “It’s almost like art on the walls without having to put art on the walls,” said Heather. “It’s very serene and gives a nod to the surroundings and nature. W
e loved the way it’s just a very soft mural."

The serene mountainscape gives a nod to the natural surroundings while working well with the homeowner's furnishings. "We chose masculine nightstands," said Heather. "And these alabaster lamps from Visual Comfort. We kept all the pillows and everything very soft and to create a serene escape, it’s your most private place. It’s your sanctuary. It’s peaceful and respite."
