# Alexa Hampton: The Power of a Personal Workspace

*Her own Manhattan office reveals how texture, intention, and thoughtful design fuel creativity every day.*

Designers spend their careers creating spaces that reflect the lives, tastes, and aspirations of others, but the spaces they create for themselves often reveal something even more meaningful. Learn how Alexa Hampton designed a space  for herself and embraced color.

As the president of renowned Mark Hampton Interiors in New York City, daughter Alexa Hampton has built a career creating some of the most elegant and enduring interiors in America. Known for her sophisticated approach to classical design, Alexa carries forward the legacy of her father, legendary designer Mark Hampton, while continuing to shape the industry through residential projects, product collections, books, and thought leadership.

An Office of One’s One

While Alexa took the reins from her father in 1998, she had worked out of his office up until two years ago. After nearly three decades, she was ready for a change of scenery. Moving just a few blocks further down Madison Avenue, Alexa transformed a floor of a postwar townhouse into her work haven, adding in oak flooring, plaster moldings, and Phillip Jeffries wallcovering. “I just wanted to design my office to not look like a bland office. I wanted it to feel like an apartment—everything that everybody loves about staying at home.”

[![AlexaHamptonOffice Collage](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/hs-fs/hubfs/AlexaHamptonOffice%20Collage.png?width=1289&height=725&name=AlexaHamptonOffice%20Collage.png)](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-NAT-TATAMI/1985)

Alexa describes her design sense as a “sieve” for her clients’ own design sense when it comes to professional projects. This office was so important to her because it was a chance to bring her style together and create something solely for herself. “I got to put in 10-inch-wide panel oak floors, I got to put in those plaster moldings, and I got to put in a bathroom and the tiles and all of these things.” Usually, Alexa says she loves to tinker but with her new office, those impulses are gone.

A Bold Transformed With Grasscloth

Alexa has been using Phillip Jeffries wallcovering for clients for more than fifteen years, particularly favoring colorful grasscloths and [Rivets® wallcovering](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/categories/RIVETS). “Phillip Jeffries are masters of color. My design nature is modern and traditional, and Phillip Jeffries is right in that sweet spot.”

Alexa came across [Totally Tatami in Grenadine Screen](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-NAT-TATAMI/1985) while perusing a book of Phillip Jeffries samples and knew it had to be the foundation of her personal office. The color was the first thing she noticed, but the texture of the Tatami grasscloth added a structure of sophistication. It was the perfect foil for the white classical plaster moldings that line her office.

[![Totallytatamialexa](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Totallytatamialexa.png?width=1289&height=725&name=Totallytatamialexa.png)](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-NAT-TATAMI/1985)

Wrapped in [Phillip Jeffries Totally Tatami wallcovering](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/wallcoverings?pj_grid%5BrefinementList%5D%5Bitmclss%5D%5B0%5D=NT1000480), the compact workspace is a study in thoughtful design. Rich texture, natural materials, and a sense of quiet restraint transform the room into more than a place to work. It is a space for creativity, reflection, and inspiration.

Using Color For Classical Styles

When people think of interior designer’s offices, they may think of eccentric or wacky designs, but Alexa defines her style as “classical” and that she loves “order and rigor,” which doesn’t have to mean shying away from color. “If you look at beautiful historical rooms, they are drenched in bright colors and then have beautiful plaster moldings and wonderful architectural aspects that temper the whole thing.”

“Clients see that you can have your primary office where you’re supposed to be productive be this vibrant pinkish red and that it still looks serious, sophisticated, and buttoned up.” One client even commissioned [Totally Tatami](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/wallcoverings?pj_grid%5BrefinementList%5D%5Bitmclss%5D%5B0%5D=NT1000480) for her residence after seeing it in Alexa’s office. Color can also brighten up dark spaces. Her office is in the back of the north side of the building and Alexa says, “having a color that can stand up to the gloom is a wonderful thing.”

Designers spend much of their careers creating beautiful environments for others, but the spaces they create for themselves often reveal something deeper. Hampton's office demonstrates how a well-designed workspace can support the creative process, proving that great design isn't measured by square footage, but by how a space makes you feel.

Years after its completion, the office took on a new life when it was selected for inclusion in *Phillip Jeffries: Walls*. When Philip Bershad personally delivered a copy of the book to Hampton, she turned the pages to discover the very room she was sitting in. It was a fitting full-circle moment for a space that proves the most inspiring rooms aren't always the grandest. Sometimes, they're simply the places where great ideas begin.
