The beautiful natural textures of Phillip Jeffries Arrowroot Inlay added tranquility to this space while making a statement.
Known for its quiet beaches and family-friendly environment, Mantoloking offers small-town charm and scenic Jersey Shore coastlines. For one New York City family, the close proximity to New York City and relaxing atmosphere made this beach house the perfect getaway. They hired New York-based Quartet Design Studio, co-founded by Dorian Walther, Sarah Olman, and Judy Chung, to transform their beach house into a much-needed sanctuary.
We chatted with the dynamic trio to hear more about the family's style and design plan.
The Design Plan
“This is their place to recuperate and gather with friends and family,"said Sarah Olman. "We wanted this relaxed boho-inspired that still felt polished.” Quarter Design Studio previously designed the family's bold New York City residence and knew they wanted this beach house to be a more muted version. Since the family’s residence on New York’s Upper East Side used a lot of bold graphics and colors, Quartet Design Studio brought the same use of pattern, but in much more muted and relaxing tones to the beach house.
Inspiration struck when they entered the Phillip Jeffries New York showroom and saw Arrowroot Inlay. “It gave the room that instant personality with a hit of pattern and playful texture,” said Olman. “We didn’t even need art!” On the chairs they used a Ralph Lauren fabric with a similar weave to complement the wallcovering.
Arrowroot Inlay wallcovering gave the dining room, the heart of the home’s gathering space, that wow-factor without compromising on a relaxing atmosphere.
Dining Room Details
Designed for entertainment and friend and family visits, they knew they needed a statement piece in the dining room. They reconfigured the space to seat up to eight people with a large round table to enhance conversations. Olman said, “the surrounding rooms are painted in a neutral calming hue but the dining room is the ‘star’ that draws you into the space.”

Not all grasscloths are created equal. “When I’m looking for something with a wow factor or if we just need a quality staple, PJ is a great source that we always find ourselves going toward,” said Olman. The design studio is already planning their next Phillip Jeffries installation of It's Riveting and Suede Lounge for a full gut renovation project in NYC's Tribeca.

The installation went off without a hitch—even the dining room door got a makeover. To keep the room’s design looking seamless and with an enveloping warmth, Quartet Design Studio covered the dining room door with the Arrowroot Inlay wallcovering, too.
