From her Paris studio on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, interior designer Stephanie Coutas approaches spaces as layered compositions where architecture, material, and atmosphere converge.

Known for her ability to bridge classical frameworks with a contemporary sensibility, Stephanie left a career in fashion nearly 15 years ago to follow her true passion and founded [her interior design studio, Stephanie Coutas Interior Design Studio](https://stephaniecoutas.com/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20608108008&gbraid=0AAAAAqUc5iBIxdu0XaUrYhRZa7u-zQx4L&gclid=CjwKCAjw1tLOBhAMEiwAiPkRHsR_x89J4h7LyV4no8SIOdpDRnOyipWsjbjK3mWT0BqbZAMp5IiiAhoCmnkQAvD_BwE). For this project, her client was looking to modernize their Haussmannian apartment, a classic Parisian style defined by grand proportions, ornate moldings, and a formal architecture rooted in 19th Century design. While the structure had stunning classic elements, Stephanie was tasked with reinterpreting this home for today's living while preserving its historical style.

Layering Texture
“The primary inspiration for this project was to reinterpret the Haussmannian apartment through a more contemporary way of living,” Stephanie said, “while deeply respecting the architectural codes that define the richness of Parisian heritage.”

That balance between reverence and reinvention guided the entire design. The apartment was conceived as “a setting for hosting and gathering,” with a spacious entrance gallery that opens into a series of reception rooms designed for fluidity and connection.

“The idea was to preserve the elegance and structure of the original space while reimagining these elements to suit modern lifestyles,” Coutas said. Each room unfolds naturally into the next, creating what Stephanie described as “a coherent, harmonious, and natural flow from the entrance all the way through to the end of the apartment.”

Natural Materials, Textures, and Tones
“We were drawn to a palette rooted in warm, earthy tones,” Stephanie explained, “with the intention of bringing depth and softness to the apartment’s more classical architecture.” The [natural wallcovering, High Tide](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/wallcoverings?pj_grid%5BrefinementList%5D%5Bitmclss%5D%5B0%5D=NT1000810), introduced a tactile, organic quality that offsets the precision of the moldings and millwork.

Rather than covering entire walls, Stephanie installed the wallcovering within the traditional panel moldings. “By placing the wallcovering within the panels, we were able to create a dialogue between heritage and texture,” she said. “Allowing something contemporary and sensorial to exist seamlessly within a very codified architectural framework.”

The effect reframes the panel itself. No longer a static, decorative element, it becomes an active surface—“almost like canvases within the architecture,” Stephanie noted.  “It is not so much about following a trend, but rather about reinterpreting traditional codes through a more contemporary lens.”

A Lasting Impression
When the project was revealed, the response was immediate and emotional. “The client was genuinely moved,” Stephanie shared. “There was a real sense of discovering a space that felt both familiar and entirely reimagined.”

What resonated most was the equilibrium. “The apartment retained its architectural integrity, yet felt softer, more personal, and deeply livable,” she said. “It is always our intention that a space reveals not only a vision, but also an atmosphere—something that can be felt immediately, beyond the purely visual.”
