HOUSE OF PJ: Phillip Jeffries Wallcovering Stuns in Bretman Rock’s Hawaiian Home

The
Asian American Pacific Islander Design Alliance (AAPIDA) launched earlier this month with the goal of uplifting the Asian American and Pacific Islander design community through mentorship, networking and advocacy programs. The brainchild of design super stars, Young Huh and Jessica Davis, this program will be dedicated to students, makers, and professionals who identify as Asian American and Pacific Islander. As we continue to learn, support, and lift each other up within the design community as a whole, we'd like to salute Huh and Davis' efforts and share this beautiful partnership between influencer Bretman Rock and MCYIA's Chuen Yee.

DESIGNING A COLORFUL HAWAIIAN VILLA
It takes just one look inside Bretman Rock’s home to understand why the YouTube content creator has made a name for himself as a beauty and social media influencer. His five-bedroom Hawaiian mansion is filled with color, patterns, and unique details that reflect his style and pay tribute to his Asian heritage. Rock is Filipino-American.

The first thing to know about Rock’s home is that nothing is subtle. “I wanted the house to feel as if a cool, gay island kid got really rich,” the Filipino-born personality tells Architectural Digest. “It needed to scream ‘gay Asian immigrant success.’” To achieve that perfect mix, Rock, who was raised in Hawaii, worked with design firm MCYIA, founded in 2004 by Chuen Yee. “I love that they captured how weird I am,”’ he says.

Not only did they play to his self-proclaimed weirdness, but they also brought the lush Hawaiian greenery found outside his countless windows indoors with Phillip Jeffries natural textured wallcoverings.

My favorite part about [my bedroom] is this wallpaper,” he says  of our The Grove wood wallcovering. “It just ties this room together so well.”

MORE ABOUT THE GROVE WALLCOVERING
Part of our Wood Veneer collection, Phillip Jeffries wood wallcoverings are handmade by skilled artisans using authentic wood that is laser cut into a grove pattern and then applied to gold or silver backgrounds. Choose 8626 Regency Navy like Rock, or one of the other neutral—and striking—color combinations shown from left: 8624, 8626, 8622 and 8625.

A LUSH DINING ROOM
Rock and his design team at MCYIA also incorporated a Phillip Jeffries wallcovering into his dining room with one of our statement-making digital murals. Arboretum in Midnight provides an ideal backdrop with its gorgeous foliage printed on vinyl. Phillip Jeffries digital mural wallcoverings are a true mix of artistry and innovation. Authentic artwork is translated into wallcoverings that can be printed on our durable vinyl as Rock did, or also on paper, grasscloth, silk, linen, and authentic metallic leaf.

If you’re thinking you’ve been transported to a world full of wildness, well, that’s exactly what Rock was hoping for.
“When I moved to America I couldn’t read that well…one of the first books I read was Where the Wild Things Are [by Maurice Sendak,]” Rock says of his inspiration . “[The wallcovering] just reminds me so much of moving to America and my love of reading.”

Get lost in this mural of lush foliage, digitally printed on natural and vinyl wallcovering grounds, for a collection where artistry meets innovation. ARBORETUM from left include: 5579, 5581, 5575, and 5578.

Architectural Digest steps inside the home as we learn about Rock’s design choices, including why one digital mural wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries reminds him of “being an immigrant kid.”
