I enjoy giving forcing bulbs such as paperwhites or amaryllis during the holiday season. It's fun to think of the recipient and their aesthete when putting the package together. Glass containers, pebbles, rustic pots, bulb forcing vases, sometimes just a bag of beautiful bulbs with a ribbon if they are the kind of person already inclined towards indoor gardening. Bulbs and "kits" are readily available this time of year through local garden centers, on-line vendors and even big box stores although it's more fun to curate your own package. - Lisa Schofield

THE BEST MIXING BOWL
For anyone who cooks, here is something you may not know about but won't know how you ever lived without one ... a Suribachi Bowl. It's basically a Japanese mortar and pestle, but it's a ceramic bowl, the interior is unglazed ceramic with ridges you can grind or mix anything against with the wooden Surikogi. I use it all the time for quick salad dressings, sauces, flavored sugars or salts, and to grind dried herbs, seeds or pods. The edge of the bowl has pour spouts so you won't make a mess when using it with liquids.
