# VIDEO: A Serene Bedroom Transformation
*Alder & Tweed's Heather Humphrey gives this primary bedroom a luxe design makeover.*
This calming bedroom oasis features layers of soft textures in a chic, neutral palette.
Creating a sanctuary-like retreat in a home is essential for promoting relaxation and better sleep quality. Whether for overall well-being or to reduce stress, many people prioritize this because a peaceful bedroom environment is perfect for unwinding after a long day.
For one couple, the first step toward creating their dream home was teaming up with [the design firm Alder & Tweed](https://www.alderandtweed.com) to redesign their 1950s rambler-style home in Utah. Known for quietly chic and luxurious interiors that blend nature with stunning interiors, principal and founder Heather Humphrey visited the property and instantly drew inspiration from the surrounding mountains to infuse a sense of place.
"Both sides of Salt Lake are surrounded by mountains," she said. "Wherever you go, you have beautiful view of mountains."
**THE BEFORE: A Blank Slate**
The entire home was reimagined with a new addition, a new kitchen and a new primary suite. Since the rooms were completely remodeled, it was the perfect blank slate to start with. “It was just white walls – a pretty generic room,” she said.
Adding Warmth
"We added a fireplace in the bedroom," said Heather. "The bed looks out onto the windows which looks onto the mountain range, but to the left of the bed there’s a gas-burning fireplace on the wall. It’s not a big room, but it’s long. Utah get so cold so it’s nice to have these cosy little nooks and areas. Adding a fireplace was a fun thing to do!"

How To Install A Scenic Mural Wallcovering
To create a serene escape in the bedroom, Humphrey choose the [beautiful and scenic](https://phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-GAL-DAYBREAK)[mural, Daybreak](https://phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-GAL-DAYBREAK). This layered ombré mountainscape wallcovering features painterly brush strokes and dimensional texture.
“The wallcovering was the inspiration!” said Heather.

A Serene Color Palette
Heather chose the soft neutral colorway, [Clouds, 9533](https://phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-GAL-DAYBREAK). Once the mural was installed, the room felt like a sanctuary.
“It’s almost like art on the walls without having to put art on the walls,” said Heather. “It’s very serene and gives a nod to the surroundings and nature. We loved the way it’s just a very soft mural."
**THE AFTER: A Bedroom Sanctuary**
The serene mountainscape gives a nod to the natural surroundings while working well with the homeowner's furnishings. "We chose masculine nightstands," said Heather. "And these alabaster lamps from Visual Comfort. We kept all the pillows and everything very soft and to create a serene escape, it’s your most private place. It’s your sanctuary. It’s peaceful and respite."
