Phillip Jeffries is thrilled to announce a new wallcovering collection, Nod To Mod, A Pure Imagination® Creation by Michelle Gerson. Drawing inspiration from geometric patterns of the 1970s, this hand-painted, retro motif was transformed into a large-scale design for the wall. HOW IT BEGAN
When a client in the Hamptons needed a basement refresh, Michelle Gerson, principal and founder of NYC-based firm Michelle Gerson Interiors, began searching for the perfect wallcovering. Michelle's design aesthetic merges luxury and comfort with Art Deco and Mid-Century elements so she was looking for a wallcovering inspired by these design styles, but couldn't find the right one.“Part of what inspired us to create a custom wallcovering was that we were looking for a pattern with texture," Michelle said. "But everywhere we looked, we just found pattern or texture. I wanted to integrate the two.”
Lucky for Michelle, Phillip Jeffries offers a custom program called Pure Imagination®. With a few simple steps, designers can create their own wallcoverings.
CREATING A CUSTOM COLLECTION
Michelle chose to create a completely custom wallcovering. She chose the CREATE Your Own Design option and collaborated with the PJ Design team, discussing colors and textures. Once the inspiration and custom form was submitted, Michelle's artwork was created for her within a few weeks. When a designer chooses to create a custom Phillip Jeffries wallcovering, our in-house team of designers will work with them every step of the way.
Drawing inspiration from patterns of the 1970s, Michelle wanted a wallcovering design with modern shapes in a geometric pattern. PJ's in-house design team handpainted the custom design and transformed it into a mural for the walls.
"And before we knew it," she said. "A collection was created!"
After seeing her first strike off, Michelle was inspired her to expand her collection. "When we pulled the wallcovering out of the package and hung it on the wall, we were amazed," said Michelle. "We were so happy with how it came to life. And it made us think: we should do it in this other color, too!" See the dramatic before/after of the basement here.
We agreed and decided to make it an official PJ Collection: Nod to Mod, A Pure Imagination® Creation by Michelle Gerson. This stunning new collection will be available in several colorways. Stay tuned for more!

GET TO KNOW MICHELLE
Phillip Jeffries sat down with interior designer Michelle Gerson to learn more about her.
What inspires you?
MG: A LOT of things inspire me: Art, travel, culture. And lots of different things like trips to museums or movies I’ve seen. There’s inspiration in every little corner everywhere.
Have you ever designed wallcoverings?
MG: I have not designed wallpaper before, but I always dreamed of it. Being asked to work with PJ on this was really a dream come true!
Where would you use this wallcovering?
MG: I see this wallcovering in a lot of different places. In a light, airy space it looks great in these light colors. In the dark navy grasscloth, it could be great in a home theater or a den. The blush could work in a baby’s room. It lends itself to a lot of areas and spaces.
What is your go-to design tip?
MG: Always add a little black and white to the room.
