The PJ Earth Day Guide | Living Greener Beautifully

Written by Phillip Jeffries | Apr 20, 2023 5:57:55 PM
It's almost Earth Day! This year our PJ Promise is to be cleaner, greener—MORE sustainable.

In celebration of Earth Day coming up on Saturday, April 22nd, let's check in to see how we've been doing as a company! Phillip Jeffries is incredibly proud of its accomplishments and we invite you to join us as we continue on the path toward sustainable living and environmentally friendly practices. We call this our "Great and Worthy Purpose." Together, we can do even better in 2023.

PHILLIP JEFFRIES ECO INITIATIVES
Here are few ways PJ is inspiring a more beautiful world.

100% Wind Power
In 2022, Phillip Jeffries converted all it's US-based facility and warehouse energy needs to 100% wind power. Thanks to a wind farm in Ohio, our US headquarters is utilizing this renewable energy source. Plus, it's inexhaustible, nonpolluting, reduces usage of fossil fuels, and reduces our carbon footprint by A THIRD! Learn more about our supplier, AEP Energy here.

Utilizing rapidly renewable resources

Phillip Jeffries is taking steps to create environmentally friendly wallcoverings. As the leader in authentic grasscloth wallcoverings, we offer a wide range of textures and colors of this inherently beautiful and natural product. In addition, we offer an array of collections that utilize sustainable materials, such as recycled materials, rapidly renewable plant fibers, and eco-friendly inks.

Sustainable Style
When we source authentic, natural resources to make beautiful, artisanal, and specialty wallcoverings, we consciously source renewable materials, certified woods, and recycled content. It may be an extra step, but it’s an important one.

GreenGuard certification
We use eco-friendly inks in many of our wallcoverings including all our digital prints. The UL GREENGUARD Gold Certification Standard includes health-based criteria for additional chemicals and also requires lower total VOC emissions levels to ensure that products are acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities. In addition to limiting emissions of more than 360 VOCs and total chemical emissions, UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified products must also comply with requirements of the state of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers, also known as California Section 01350. Learn more about it here.

Did you know we have several new prints? We offer a printed wallcovering for every purpose in a vast array of colors. This unique series of boldly scaled designs is printed on our most popular wallcoverings including paper weaves, natural grasses, linens, silks, and durable vinyl. Planting native species
Members of the Eco Team are heading back to the Alonzo F. Bonsal Wildlife Preserve to plant native species like Buttonbush, Silky Dogwood, Arrow Wood, and more. Last summer, in partnership with the Bonsal Wildlife Preserve Invasive Strike Team, our team infiltrated the woods to remove the invasive plant, Japanese knotweed, from the preserve in Montclair, NJ. Volunteers from Phillip Jeffries spent a Saturday morning wearing work gloves and sharpening their sheers as they began to smackdown these invasive plants in an area where hundreds of newly planted trees and shrubs were in danger. Planting and keeping new plants thriving is essential to wildlife in the area. LEARN MORE

Clean up hikes
In addition to the many benefits of spending time outdoors and what it can do for your mental agility, attention span, and creativity, our Eco Team has found hiking to be a great way to help our local areas, make the world more beautiful, spend time together, and get some exercise.  Every year, the PJ Eco Team coordinates a robust list of local hikes from swamp trails and family-friendly fairy hikes to lookout point trails and advanced red hikes. It's a seasonal favorite activity!

Biodegradable packaging for THE DROP magazine
Every year we publish a gorgeous glossy magazine that we send all over the world. We're thrilled to be able to package it in a completely biodegradable sleeve! This means you can simply dispose of it with food waste, garden compost, or in recycling bins. Our planet continues to be a priority at PJ, so we are continually making strides to be a greener company in everything we do. ORDER THE DROP

A PJ plant swap
This year, as a special event to kick off "Earth Month," our in-house PJ Eco Team hosted a plant swap as a way for employees to gather, share tips and plants, and get to know each other. The PJ Plant Swap brought interior plant enthusiasts together. Plus, it’s sustainable and makes expanding your plant collection that much easier. READ MORE
